Position Summary

The Medical Director is an experienced veterinary specialist who serves as a clinical leader in an emergency and multi-specialty veterinary hospital, specifically overseeing the veterinarians. They provide direction, oversight, review, and continuous development of all components of clinical practice within ER and specialty departments. The primary goal of the Medical Director is to lead others in fulfilling the mission, vision, goals and objectives of the hospital, while ensuring that the best possible medical care is provided to all patients.

While under the supervision of the Hospital Administrator, the Medical Director must be able to effectively and accurately manage, delegate, or perform the following duties that include but are not limited to:

Medical Practice

  • Establish a culture of collaboration among colleagues for the benefit of patient care
  • Communicate the vision, mission, and values of the practice to the emergency and specialty team and actively encourage behaviors that align with and support the goals of the practice
  • Create an environment where team members are inspired to perform at their best, are acknowledged for taking initiative to grow, and reward those who exceed expectations
  • Understand the financial aspects of managing a clinic with appropriate goals and milestones required of each doctor and department to be successful
  • Meet department production goals by establishing mutually beneficial relationships with referring veterinarians and provide guidance to specialists on how to earn the trust of the referral community
  • Evaluate hospital wide and individual emergency and specialty doctor clinical performance and productivity relative to specific individual and hospital goals
  • Ensure that the clinical practices of the veterinarian staff abide by all policies, procedures, and laws to ensure that the best interests of the organization are kept in mind while providing high quality health care
  • Regularly review/audit the quality and content of medical records including SOAPs, communication log, and all aspects of written records
  • Serve as point person responsible for training and development initiatives
  • Establish and implement SOPs and best practices to ensure a consistent level of care is given to all clients and patients
  • Assist management in assessing and addressing client or referring veterinarian complaints regarding clinical recommendations and/or care provide
  • Aid in development and implementation of staff, client, and referring veterinarian surveys regarding the quality of medical care offered by United
  • Track timeliness of records from each doctor
  • Source the latest advances in treatment and oversee implementation of new policies, procedures, or medical techniques/equipment within the practice
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with all team members
  • Provide regular feedback and conduct annual performance reviews for emergency and specialist veterinarians.
  • Monitor the training and efficiency of the medical team.
  • Work with HA and Human Resources to recruit, onboard and mentor new veterinarians
  • Work with management in assessing and addressing any conflict within the patient care team) that affects the quality of medical care provided
  • Participate in development and administration of performance standards for the veterinarians.
  • Monitor participation in client/rDVM communication and rDVM visits
  • Participate and lead rDVM and community outreach activities along with the Hospital Administrator.
  • Ensure veterinarians demonstrate effective communication skills, including proper use of hospital communication systems
  • Help facilitate efficient and effective communication between departments
  • Keep medical staff informed of changes, additions, issues within the practice

Job Requirements/Qualitative Skills:

  • Must have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from an AVMA accredited veterinary school
  • Must have experience in Emergency Veterinarian Medicine
  • Be licensed to practice in California
  • Minimum 8-10 years of veterinary experience in a high-quality emergency and multi-specialty practice with exemplary clinical practice displayed.
  • Must have a CA DEA License
  • Preferred Board-Certified Surgeon, DACVS
  • Preferred Doctor of Internal Medicine, DACVIM
  • Preferred Board certified by an AVMA accredited specialty college
  • Preferred Criticalist, DACVECC
